Cape Farm House

A classic cape farm house restoration in the southern suburbs. The existing garden was completely over grown and had been neglected for years, making the garden very dark in places. Some large invasive trees were removed to bring light back into the space as well as open up the views to the Constantiaberg mountains.

The owners loved the idea of a large productive food garden so we looked to the well - known Babylonstoren for inspiration in bringing their dream to life. The resulting garden now feeds the entire family- as well as many friends who regularly pop in and take home a bag of veggies.

Possibly the most striking feature of this project is the vertical garden to the living area courtyard, where a mix of hardy succulents combine to create a living artwork.

Inner City Life

The owner of this online education company wanted to “bring the outdoors in” to this open plan studio office in the center of Cape Town, creating an environment where his staff would feel far more relaxed and happy to be at work.

So we created a garden space that felt relaxed and casual by introducing informal outdoor seating, lush plantings and an interesting mix of potted shrubs.

Mountain Escape

When the new owners of a well-known mountain getaway approached us to redesign the existing garden areas and create several new ones, we knew this would be an exciting project. The existing stone house was beautifully redesigned by KLG architects- who added some new cottages and other structures to the homestead.

Our work here is ongoing as the owners have big plans for the estate. Our works to date includes several new garden areas- including a large protea garden, farm entrance avenue as well as garden areas around the new outdoor entertainment pavilion.

The next phase involves converting an old cattle kraal into a sensory garden filled with a spectacular mix of flowering groundcovers and herbs.

Newlands

Small spaces present several challenges. One needs to prioritize what is of most importance, and for this young couple it was creating outdoor areas that suited the needs of their 2 small children, while still providing attractive entertainment areas for gatherings with their family and friends.

We designed and installed a hardwood deck off the main living and dining area, which effectively increases the size of these areas.

The main garden is centered around another deck, which we built around an existing oak tree. A playhouse is situated beside the deck, which makes this a wonderful entertainment area for the kids. Once the plantings fill out this will be a magical little garden.

Sculpture Garden

The owner of this property is an avid art collector, with a particular passion for futurist steel sculptures. His all white, highly modern house on the Atlantic Seaboard almost feels like an art gallery, and thus serves as the perfect backdrop for his steel sculptures, which are carefully positioned throughout the home and garden.

We designed the garden areas so that the sculptures themselves would be the real heroes, meaning an understated palette of carefully - selected hardy species planted in large groups.

Up on the Hill

We collaborated with the internationally - renowned ARRCC on this interesting project, which overlooked the Cape Town CBD.

Being on a very steep slope, we needed to create garden areas on several levels making it logistically challenging but but very rewarding in the end. We opted for a largely indigenous plant palette as the client wanted to blur the lines between the garden and the nature reserve directly behind the house.

The informal staggered staircases were the signature on this project and, once the plantings filled the gaps in between steps, the journey through the plants became a special walk to take.

Cape Cottage

This beautiful old Cape heritage cottage that had undergone some renovations desperately needed the gardens to be as tasteful and understated as the house itself.

The owner had a very clear vision in mind for the garden as he was an avid fan of the works of master designers like Anouska Hempel and Paul Bangay. The resulting garden is structured and strong but is softened with the use of plants chosen for their varying textures and different shades of green.

Atlantic View

Situated on the slopes of Lions head, with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, this contemporary masterpiece of a house was designed by ARRCC.

We designed a garden that was simple, clean and slick with a limited plant palette. Being on a very steep slope, the garden is split into several zones - all of which are slightly different.
